Weld Repair
Like many other plant level activities today, there is an increased use and acceptance of turbo shaft weld repairing. This is being driven by the general emphasis on operating and maintaining existing capital equipment in the absence of significant new plant construction in the energy intensive industries. Successfully completed shaft repairs in the United States and throughout the world have revealed that shaft weld repair is a viable alternative to retirement.
Evaluation
Upon receipt of the client's damaged rotor, a full dimensional and Non Destructive Examination (NDE) of the shaft is performed. An inspection report of the damage and the NDE results, including the unit's current operating conditions, are forwarded to the Dresser-Rand Support Engineering Group. The original equipment files are reviewed to obtain the material specifications of the shaft and its design criteria. This evaluation determines the feasibility of weld repair for the damaged shaft.
Solution
Restoring the damaged shaft to drawing specifications is accomplished by applying Dresser-Rand's Computer Assisted Tungsten Inert Gas (CA-TIG) weld process utilizing qualified and proven procedures to build up the shaft after the damaged area has been removed through an OEM machining process. These procedures include post-weld heat treatment and non-destructive testing in accordance with the original material and manufacturing specifications of the unit. Upon completion of all weld repairs, machining and inspection, the shaft is ground to restore original dimensions, run-out and finish specifications.
The availability of factory support and procedures in remote repair centers provides our client with access to the original equipment manufacturing which can be applied to a repair without having to reverse engineer a component or speculate on the material specifications. This information allows Dresser-Rand to fully evaluate repair situations and complete component repairs that meet or exceed original equipment specifications on a routine basis.
