Case Studies

Peterborough Mail Centre

Peterborough Mail Centre was constructed in 1994-5 adjacent to Dresser-Rand's Peterborough operation. The mail centre covers a floor area of more than 20,000 square metres and includes a large sorting hall, distribution warehouse, regional offices and staff facilities. For effective and efficient operation, the facility requires heat and power to be available throughout the year. Read the case study.

Leeds Mail Centre

Constructed in 1997, Leeds Mail Centre is strategically placed to provide high volume mail sorting to the West Yorkshire area. With demand for both heat and power throughout the year, the facility represented another excellent opportunity for the Royal Mail to benefit from CHP. Read the case study.

Greenford Mail Centre

The Mail Centre at Greenford in North West London is one of Royal Mail's key facilities for the processing of the capital's mail. Required to operate continuously throughout the year, both day and night, the facility is responsible for processing over one million letters and packages every 24 hours. The uninterrupted operation of the facility is critical in helping the Royal Mail to meet its performance targets for mail delivery. Read the case study.

Baltic Arts Centre

Opened in July 2002 the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts in Gateshead is the UK's largest visual arts centre outside London. Formerly the Baltic Flour Mill, the development is situated adjacent to the river Tyne and represents a significant investment in tourism for the North East. In order to protect the works of art and ensure visitor enjoyment of the art centre, it is important to maintain a comfortable climatic environment throughout the year. Read the case study.

186k - Bristol Telehouse

186k operate a number of broadband telecommunications centres around the UK. Each telecommunications centre is built to provide electronic storage and switching capacity for internet service providers (ISP's) and telecommunication companies in the surrounding area. The site at Bristol has a constant requirement for electricity and cooling. Read the case study

186k - Hemel Hempstead Telehouse

Telecommunication centres contain vast amounts of electronic storage and switching capacity for internet service providers (ISPs) and telecommunication companies. 186k operate a number of broadband telecommunications centres around the UK. Reliability of power and cooling systems to such installations is paramount and the cost of failure has a significant impact on the business. Read the case study.

Airbus UK, Broughton

The extensive redevelopment of Airbus UK's manufacturing facility in Broughton, Cheshire comprises several buildings that accommodate the equipment required to manufacture the wings for the A380 double deck super jumbo jet. With a number of manufacturing units dispersed around the site, Airbus were keen to explore the possibility of implementing a distributed CHP solution that could provide secure power and flexible thermal outputs to serve both space heating and process requirements. Read the case study.

Airbus UK, West Factory

Airbus UK's manufacturing facility in Broughton, North Wales, has undergone extensive redevelopment over recent years, reflecting the success of the expanding range of Airbus aircraft. The new West Factory, a £350 million building the size of 12 football pitches is being used for the assembly of wings for A380 and other manufacturing activity. The factory has a significant demand for thermal energy, including that of the wing painting facility. Read the case study.

Queen's Hospital, Romford

Commencing construction in July 2003, the new £261 million Queen's Hospital PFI development was built to replace the ageing Harold Wood and Oldchurch sites. Built on a brown field site, the new hospital incorporates state-of-the-art facilities and the latest technical advancements. This hospital site provided an ideal application for CHP as it has a simultaneous demand for heating and power throughout the day. Read the case study.

CHP from Food Waste

Biogas Project, Kings Lynn, UK

The opportunity was to maximise the power generation potential, and therefore revenue (including Renewable Obligation Certificates - ROC's), from the enhanced biogas production while providing thermal outputs to meet the process requirements. Read the case study.

The Walbrook Building, UK

The Walbrook Building in London is one of the first sites to install a trigeneration system which incorporates multi-effect chiller technology. As part of the planning consent for the project the consultant had to demonstrate the most efficient and low carbon solution for the power, heating and chilling loads for the site. Working alongside Dresser-Rand from the outset, the CCHP system was developed specifically to accommodate the requirements of the site. Read the case study.
